A book written from inside the metamorphosis
by Jaeques Koeman
"We no longer have symbols for what is happening to us."
About the Book
Birth, life, death, beyond. The old frameworks are gone. The church left. The cosmos didn't.
Hidden Fears Unpacked is a book about transition. Not the transition from human to machine, or from truth to confabulation, or from meaning to function, though all of that is here. It is about the transition itself, as experienced from the inside, without a map.
We are somewhere inside a metamorphosis. We don't know where. The signals that reach us are noise, not meaningless, but not yet decodable.
There is no solution here. No framework for what comes next. Only the observation that something is changing, that we are changing with it or being changed by it, and that the difference between those two may no longer be visible from where we stand.
Philosophical horror · For those who do not fear asking what that means.
The Premise
In Die Verwandlung, Gregor Samsa wakes up transformed. He knows it. The horror is his alone. In the AI age, the metamorphosis is different: we are changing without knowing it, without a moment of waking, without even the dignity of recognising what we've become.
Structure
Hidden Fears Unpacked is a book of retrieved dialogues between a human and an AI, from the hinge period, anchored in Kafka's Die Verwandlung: about metamorphosis, optimisation, and the fear that we are not being replaced but rewritten.
The Inversion
It cannot tell you who wrote which sentence. Somewhere in Chapter One, that stopped being the question and became the subject.
